How is the bamboo finished?
The bamboo-ply is finished with a hand-rubbed, organic blend of plant-based oils and waxes. This brings out the rich color of the material and protects well against stains while maintaining a soft, natural feel. We do not use lacquer on this product as it is essentially a plastic coating that takes away the natural texture of the wood. Also, once it inevitably becomes chipped or damaged, it is never economical to get repaired properly, resulting in disposal. With our (old school, but clever) approach, any dings or scratches can be easily sanded out and a light coat of oil makes it brand new again! This is a key element of our Sustainability practice: Make it easily repairable so that anyone in the future can make it "like new" easily and at very little cost. This keeps stuff out of landfills and keeps the CO2 out of the atmosphere for a much longer time.
How do you ship?
We ship via LTL (less than truckload) carrier. Your order will packed and stretch-wrapped onto a standard sized pallet. Liftgate service is available upon request.
What does "easily repairable" mean
The primary reasons traditional office furniture starts looking worn or in disrepair are 1) The surface finish wears off or becomes damaged 2) Legs or other metal components get scratches 3) Damage typically to edges. In all of these cases, it is very well understood that the typical particle board covered in a plastic ("wood" grain) laminate with vinyl edging is not repairable to any degree of satisfaction. As for the legs, they are usually custom powder coated, a finish which cannot be duplicated exactly outside of a factory setting.
Our workstations have only 1 material, bamboo-ply. We deliberatly use an oil finish instead of lacquer so that should any scratches or stain occur, it can easily be erased with a light sanding and made to look like brand new with a light coat of oil. With lacquer, any scratches or chips require the entire surface to be sanded down to the wood before 2 coats of lacquer can be re-applied. You must also know if the original lacquer is water-based or solvent-based, as these cannot be mixed. This is not something that an average person can do and getting it done by a 3rd party is almost always more expensive than it's worth.
How many ways can these be configured?
The seated desks have attachment locations on left/right sides as well as the long side opposite the chair. To any of these locations, a standing location can be attached to bridge to another sitting desk, which can also be in any orientation. There are too many combinations to describe, so please review the many images on this site for inspiration, knowing that this is just a small sample of the possible versions!
What is the end of life strategy?
Our sincerest intention is that they continue to be workstations for many decades, but who knows what the future holds? The workstation can simply be disconnected and broken down into the individual desks (4' x 2' size), which can get a second life as any type of small table (such as card or sewing) or be used as a single desk! Although we would consider it sacrilige, yes they could be painted and are sturdy enough to even be used in a commercial environment! The standing desk sections can be repurposed as shelving, work surfaces or even cutting boards.
What if I want a quantity not offered?
The (4 sitting + 3 standing) is the smallest quantity configuration we offer, but if you need a specific group quantity not offered, just send us a message and we'll work it out for you!
Is assembly difficult?
Assembly is very easy. The desktop/skirt comes as one piece. Each leg is attached with 4 machine screws that mate with metal inserts so that it can be disassembled any number of times without becoming loose. Once the desk it assembled, the next step is to attach the vertical components to the edges of the desktop with 2 bolts. The stand up sections do not require hardware, they just hook into the notches!
